Being Informed

Posted by

Would you ever just walk into a car dealer without first having done some research into the cars being offered? Would you ever consider buying a business without ever doing the research into the financial condition of the company? The answer to each of these questions would be a resounding no. I could give more examples but you get the idea, being informed will always help you to make better decisions.

Recently a company that produces what they refer too as sleeping bags; what they produce is sold in stores like Walmart's for maybe $10/$12.00 each. The buy all of the shells and linings put together in China to which they fill with the cheapest polyester fiber that can be purchased in order to support this price range. If they called them slumber bags which are sold for kids to use at slumber parties it is more accurate. I doubt that they will stand up to laundering for very long, but what you get is $10.00 worth of material sewn together. They proudly state on their web site that these bags are made in America  This company has for several years desired to get into the higher priced market selling sleeping bags. In April of 2015 they with significant investment monies purchase American Recreation the parent company of Kelty, Sierra Designs, Slumberjack and Wenzel. Eeach of these companies to the best of my knowledge has not been profitable with their sleeping bag products, if they were would the company that owned them sell them off? Probably not.

I reviewed the sleeping bags being offered under the Kelty label, and they are speaking of in the literature their new insulation, Cloudloft. What is Cloudloft, a chopped staple polyester fiberfill batting that has been quilted to the nylon shell and lining materials. The bag I saw on the web site Mistral for -20 F use I am quite sure has not been tried by any one in their employ outside in that condition because if they did they would have found out that it does not perform at that temperature. During the 52 years I have been in the business of working woith every synthetic fiber made any place in the world, chopped staple has NEVER performed as their literature states.

They has  other sleeping bags that use Thermpro also a chopped staple polyester fiberfill that is "uniquely engineered that is against the lining so it is against your body and over it with DriDown. This line of bags is called Dualist because it contains the two different types of insulation. All of these bags are noted as EN rated EN stands for European Normal which must be listed on all bags sold in retail stores in Europe. The reality is that Wiggy's sells lots of bags to people in Europe. The EN ratings are no different than "clo" rating neither which is referred to as a value have any value.

Now you are better informed about what is put on the market completely untested.
