Live & Learn About Hammock Camping

Posted by

I am acquiring an education with respect to hammock camping.

When you hammock camp you do not have a tent to get into when it rains so as I am finding out some people live with being in the rain and some take some form of tarp. What I observed on the web sites of companies that sell tarps for hammock campers must be suspended from the tree over the tarp. If the wind is blowing they would act like a sail catching air and make it difficult if not impossible to put up. If it is raining the rain is apt to get under the tarp, same goes for snow. Also what do they weigh? Lots of cords and or shock cord. Is there a better way (?), yes I believe so.

I happen to own some very light weight waterproof ripstop nylon. I will be making a hammock bivi bag that will easily fit over the Wiggy’s Hammock bags and tie around the foot end covering it completely and fit over the hood end of the bag open so too do not exfoliate yourself. A very important point as it has to be open enough to allow what you breathe out not stay in the bivi. I do not know what the weight will be until I make one and actually weigh it. I am guessing about a pound. As for cost again I will have to take an educated guess of maybe $40.00. it will come with the durable number 10 YKK molded tooth zipper and its own stuff sack.

A second item that I have given thought to is a large waterproof stuff sack made from the same material to put you pack and whatever in so it will not necessarily get wet. Weight less than a pound I am sure and maybe $25.00.

Will give more specific information later.
