On 14 October 1997, Brig. Gen. Charles E. “Chuck" Yeager flew a McDonnell Douglas F-15D at Mach 1.35, commemorating the 50th anniversary of his being the first man to fly faster than the speed of sound on 14 October 1947 in the Bell X-1. The flight was also Gen. Yeager's last military flight, ending 55 years and one month in Air Force cockpits.
