non-functioning sleeping bag

THE NEXT VIDEO: ABOUT A SLEEPING BAG

I was told about the new “heat seeker’ insulating material that The North Face (TNF) is putting into their new selection of synthetic sleeping bags. So I went into the local REI store and bought one. it will be the focus of the next video which will be filmed on Thursday afternoon and available for observing on Friday.

What TNF has done is use a chopped staple fiberfill for the bottom insulation and a continuous filament fiber fill on the top of the bag for the most part. The model is the Cat’s Meow which they incorrectly rate for use as cold as plus 20 degrees F.The rating in and of itself is extremely misleading. In my opinion plus 40 and higher is more like it.

When I called TNF and inquired about the bag as it was presented on their web site what they do not state is launder-ability but the representative did check and she told me they can be laundered. However, that information did not come with the bag at the point of purchase and I did not pursue it with REI’s employee. Washing this bag will essentially destroy it because the chopped staple fiber will never withstand washing without breaking apart.

TNF provides a storage bag with the bag probably all of them because as the REI clerk told me keeping the bag in the stuff sack will damage the fiberfill insulation. I suggested he view the latest video on the Wiggy’s web site. He volunteered that Wiggy’s make good stuff. I did not tell him who I was, so if he did go to the video’s he now knows.

The web site price was $189.00 and the REI price was $179.00 either price is a waste of money.

The continuous filament is an Asian fiberfill product as is the chopped staple fiberfill. Both are extremely in expensive compared to what we have in the USA. In my opinion TNF is being disingenuous in putting this product on the market. They are trading on their name claiming that they have a sleeping bag that actually works as advertised. They must have a significant mark-up because the labor to make this bag is probably half of what it cost to make the old shingle construction bags.
