ARE YOU A SAILOR?

Anyone who has spent some time on the water and still does knows that they get wet. It makes no difference to me how expensive foul weather gear you have water does get in. by the same token if the foul weather gear is water-proof you still get wet, and that is because the moisture that comes out of your body as a vapor condenses very quickly to become liquid. At that moment your problem of comfort or rather discomfort starts to occur. You initially become clammy and then you start to get a chill. Having owned my own sail boat for 6 years and spent 7 months a year sailing it in the north east and having lived aboard for 15 months when I sailed top the Bahamas I have experienced all of the above.

I started making sleeping bags for the marine market and then what I called foul weather liners when I had the Olam Company. Back then I did not have the fishnet underwear which is the key to staying comfortable in all mildly cold to arctic cold conditions on the sea or land. There are products that I now make that aid in the comfort of being on a boat; liner jacket and vest for mild weather sailing, and the Supplex vest, sweater or Alaska Range parka liner for colder weather. However, the first layer should always be the fishnets and I am partial to a cotton second layer to absorb the moisture, the cotton layer actually stabilizes the moisture, with the fishnets between you and the wet cotton you will not be clammy or get a chill. That is the only way you can manage the moisture. There are companies that make garments that they claim has some miraculous ability for moisture management. If you believe them you also believe Gore-Tex works. Then the 3rd layer could be either the light weight vest or jacket depending upon the ambient air temperature.

The beauty of wearing Wiggy clothing has to do with the fact that even if the clothing does get wet it does not make a difference as thousands have experienced with my sleeping bags they do not get cold. I have been and continue to be amazed at the performance of the LAMILITE/CLIMASHILED made product. I does not matter what I manufacture using it as an insulation the result is always the same; being warm regardless how wet the garment is.

When I watch on occasion programs such as crabbers on the Bering Sea or the guys who fish for tuna I observe that they are wearing garments that may very well be made from cotton or probably fleece such as polar tech. I am very sure they are uncomfortable. Although what they wear is never a subject of these shows.

As far as I am concerned whether you are on land or sea moisture is again your mortal enemy and if you can neutralize it as is the case with the fishnet underwear and Lamilite insulated clothing you will be far better off than wearing any of the close knit long underwear or down insulated garments. You can also include every other synthetic fiberfill used for insulation in outerwear these days. Yes, the companies that offer these forms of insulation in my opinion have no knowledge of whether these insulating materials function for the temperatures the garments are being used in. this has been going on for years and people have been disappointed for years.

The coming winter according to the Famers Almanacs, there are several believe we are in for a very cold winter and I think they are correct. That said, chose your winter coats carefully, and I hope they will be Wiggy’s.
