POLYESTER FABRICS ARE CHEAPER THAN NYLON FABRICS
Companies in the USA that contract with companies in Asia to make sleeping bags for them dictate what materials are to be used.
Those materials are made in Asia.
When I got into the sleeping bag business years ago every manufacturer used nylon fabric. Today many of the different model bags are made with polyester fabric, why [?] because it is cheaper than nylon. This leads me to flammability.
On my home page is my u-tube video titled “Wiggy’s No Burn’.
What it shows is me burning my bags and demonstrating when the source of flame is removed the burning stops and it is cool to the touch. All of my bags are insulated with Lamilite.
One bag I burned was a down bag. the shell and lining were nylon.
Once i started burning it the flame traveled very quickly through the down which kept the nylon burning. Had the fabric been polyester the burning would have been faster and more intense.
The air in the down was a catalyst and as you can see in the video the burning was so intense, we had to take a fire extinguisher to put it out.
I went on the Moosejaw web site since they carry almost every bag in the world and found most of the bags they sell are made with polyester shell and lining fabrics. It doesn’t matter if the bags are synthetic [polyester fiberfill] or down filled.
Many of the bags do not identify the fabrics used for shell and lining. Based on the price of the materials available I am sure the fabric is polyester.
I have presented reasons over the years as to why buying a Wiggy’s bag is an excellent investment, after viewing my video there is one more.
By the way all bags referred to are “no sleep sleeping bags”.
When it comes to sleeping bags companies that claim to sell them in my opinion have no regard for the consumer.
And of course every youth bag is made from the cheap polyester fabrics. For years i have received phone calls mostly from women asking if my bags were fire retardant treated, the answer is no. Now they can be assured that the youth bags they buy at retail stores are made with polyester fabrics that do burn.
