cycling clothing for the fall and winter

WINTER CYCLING GEAR

Today I read an article published on the Sporting Goods Business web site about cycling gear that was high lighting Pearl Izumi Cycling Gear. So I took the time to read it and then go to their web site. This is a market I had not given thought too, I should have. Years ago when I relocated in Grand Junction I would bike some of the outlying areas; this was before mountain biking, in the fall of the year. I would wear my fishnet underwear and sweat suit over it and a waterproof pullover. Even though the temperature was in the high 30’s or low 40’s I was never cold. The sweats were soaked but because of the fishnets I was dry and never had a chill.

As I learned from the article people who bike in the winter experience wet spray from the ground or snow as well as light rain. The purpose of the article was to introduce a new knit fabric that had a special water repellent treatment for combating what I just described. They also show arm warmers and leg warmers on their web site. All of this started me thinking that I had I believe much more efficient clothing that will perform better when people bicycle in the fall and winter seasons.

Certainly the fishnets should always be your first layer. What is worn over them on the top is the wind shirt. I guarantee that you will be far and away more comfortable on top. The wind shirt is completely unconstricting of movement. Yesterday a friend came in and I showed it to him. He asked about its weight, so we weighted the garment which happened to be a 3 XL. The weight was one pound 3.6 ounces (19.6 ounces). The scale used is the digital scale I showed when I weighted a number of garments in the video, an expensive digital scale. So the smaller sizes weigh less.

The bottoms can be whatever is comfortable over the fishnets and they really shouldn’t be constricting of movement. On top of them the leg jackets only made with the Ducksback material outer and the L-3 Lamilite lining. The Ducksback fabric for resisting rain and mud and the Lamilite for warmth!

I am certain that this combination will offer one the most comfortable fall and winter bicycling wear. I am positive those of you who have been fall and winter bicyclists have all experienced getting a chill when you stop and rest, that is history when you wear fishnets and Lamilite insulated clothing.

The fishnets and wind shirt are already available on the web site. Shortly when I have re-costed the leg jackets made with the Ducksback material it will be added.

FOLLOW UP AT REI

I took a moment to call REI and ask why the change from eVent to Gore-Tex?

Not to be long winded I was told because Gore-Tex was top of the line waterproof breathable. I was further told that the eVent actually was more “breathable”. That comment came from a technical person at REI.

If the eVent actually was more “vapor permeable” which is the correct term that should be used how it is not the top of the line product over Gore-Tex.

REI is what I refer to as a drug store selling anything and everything that can apply to the world of outdoor products. Good, bad or indifferent as to quality, performance of country of origin; just so long as they can maximize profits.

What a sham!
