LACK OF HEAT MOVEMENT IS A GOOD THING

LACK OF HEAT MOVEMENT OUT OF A WIGGY’S BAG

I recently published an article about moisture moving out of a Wiggy’s bag in the form of vapor but the heat produced by the person in the bag did not go with the moisture. “MOVEMENT OF MOISTURE FROM WIGGY’S INSULATED PRODUCTS”.

A more detailed explanation of why the heat that you produce while in a sleeping bag made with the Lamilite/Climashield insulation stays in the insulation is necessary.

When I was lost the first night out before dark, I found a small group of boulders situated in some what of a circle. I decided that this would be a good area to camp since I had good visibility if any animals were to show up. I had a good source of firewood as well.

Once the fire was started, I pulled long timbers between the boulders so I had three large timbers to pull to the fire versus going out and getting more firewood as the fire burned down. The area stayed very warm even though the temperature was 0 degrees or lower.

As it happened, I had a large enough fire that was sustained it heated the boulders. They in turn helped keep the area warm. The boulders are a very dense material and the heat getting to them could not move through the boulders very quickly, but slowly. If they did not exist the heat from the fire would simply move from the fire up towards the sky, no matter how big I made it. At the time I did not realize how fortunate I was to have settled in the location. As I reminisced, I realized that I had the warmth of the rocks helping to heat the area.

Now to the Lamilite/Climashield. (L/C)

I use particular weights of the L/C that are very dense for their weight. When you get into a Wiggy’s bag you experience heat build up very quickly. The reason is the heat from your body is trapped so to speck in the cavity of the bag. However, it does start to move away from you as it goes through the fabric via conduction. The fabric touching the fiber heats that fiber via conduction and the fibers that are heated touching other fibers heats them.

But that heat movement is a very slow process because of the density of the L/C. As the heat moves from fiber to fiber it is losing some of its heat in the maze of fibers, in a way it does not know which fiber to jump too. The fibers are touching each other but they are not a solid wall. These fibers are trapping the air in the maze and as we know air attaches itself to any and all surfaces for a distance of 1/8th inch, so if the air is warm and is touching a fiber it is stuck there.

The density of the L/C that I use has exhibited exceptional insulating ability. At this point in time I can imagine there is an optimal amount of fiber for each temperature range the Wiggy’s bags and outerwear could be made. I have not only no idea what that might be nor do I care. the weights of L/C have and continue to do the job as is. So, no changes will ever be made.

As for the rest of the industry of people who believe they have a product that works, they are fooling themselves and then lying to the general public about their product.

When you make a chopped staple fiberfill that is as light as they have there is no density so the heated air has nothing to attach itself too. The end result is a garment that maybe claimed to be a winter garment but it is only good for summertime use. As for sleeping bags they all fit the same category of being “NO SLEEP SLEEPING BAGS”!!!
