lets go into the field

IT IS HUNTING SEASON

What is the single most important consideration that a hunter has to take into account?

Having been there and done that I know the most import consideration is how to get rid of perspiration otherwise known as sweat.

We humans give off moisture in the form of water as I recently read and reported from every pore of our body. The core body temperature is 98.6 degrees and when we are active; not necessarily running around but just hiking our core temperature increases and this causes an involuntary action to take place; the excess heat is carried via the blood stream via capillaries to the surface of the skin and water comes out of our pores coating our skin cooling our body. It is exactly the same as getting out of a warm shower and within seconds the water from the shower still on our body starts cooling us.

How do we get rid of the water and can we before it causes us to get a chill? If you are wearing fishnet underwear the water coming out of your pores will actually be heated by your body heat and convert to a vapor and it will easily move away from you. If you are wearing one of the new super duper close knit shirts that are impregnated with a chemical or whatever that is supposed to wick your moisture away from you, disappointment will follow and then a chill when the wicking does not happen.

The second layer should be a loose fitting garment that is made of woven fabric versus a knitted fabric that is close fitting. The vapor will pass through this woven fabric getting further from your skin so the chances of getting a chill are no longer possible. Also there is a very good chance that the vapor will escape through your neckline if it is open to some degree.

The same will happen if you are wearing fishnets on the lower part of your body.

Now for the most important part of your body; your feet! To guarantee warm dry feet you must wear socks that DO NOT absorbs any water. Remember it is water that comes out of our pores even from our feet. Also it is important to remember that our feet have more pores than any other area of our body so more water comes out of our feet. Most hunters unfortunately or others who go into the field wear expensive wool socks. All of the wool sock wearers have the same experience, wet feet and ultimately cold feet. Why because the wool absorbs all of the water that meets it. The wool sock companies advertise that wool socks keep your feet warm because the wool does not collapse like a thick cotton sock will. Big deal, the water is still in the wool fiber drawing heat because the water is a glutton for heat.

Of course if things aren’t bad enough wearing those boots you were told were going to keep your feet warm and dry because they have a material inside of them that will allow a MIRACLE to take place and that is to let the water out of the boot. Maybe someone from say the gore company can demonstrate this in a las vegas magic show. However, no magic has happened and no miracle has happened but you do have cold feet. That is what has happened.

The first step in avoiding this situation is to wear Lamilite socks. All of the water that comes out of your pores will be heated and vaporized so it will easily move throughout the materials that surround the Lamilite because they are vapor permeable as the Lamilite fiber is. The next item that should be worn is Lamilite boots since they too will NOT stifle the movement of the vapor. However, if you do not have Lamilite boots the Lamilite socks will help whatever boots you do have work better, not as good as Lamilite boots.

If the environment is cold as in the 0 to -30 F vicinity the over boots will be a life saver. When you are in the field and you start to experience cold feet it is time to go home, the over boots will prevent that need.

Now what you want to wear on the torso over the second layer depends upon the temperature. The example I am offering is based at 0 degrees F. My Lamilite jacket liner and the Barren Grounds Parka or the Alaska Range Parka with an L-6 zip in liner and over your legs the leg jackets.

The above clothing outfit is a little conservative, but that is how I like to present products. The real beauty of my clothing system is that it is oblivious to water. The introduction of water to my products does NOT compromise their ability to function as insulation; and that cannot be said about any other clothing system available from any place in the world. Remember if you stay dry you are warm.

FOLLOW UP TO THE LL BEAN SLEEPING BAGS

First I noted they have not removed the Primaloft aerogel bags from their web site.

Second I noticed they make a down bag also for 0 degrees at the same price with the two sizes that are the same weights. Imagine a 6’6” sleeping bag that is lighter than its 6’ size. This uses regular down

Third they have a downtick bag also for the same price but it weighs 3.2 pounds for the 6’ bag and 3.7 pounds for the 6’6” bag.

So for the same money you have a choice of the synthetic bag or two different weight of down bags all rated by ll bean for ZERO degrees F.bean like gore is in the miracle business, ZERO degrees is a pipe dream.
