LONG WALKS

APROPOS OF YESTERDAYS ARTICLE

Wiggy,

I have used you products since 1990 and still have the same sleeping bag adding several more, TV blankets, and comforter. The comforter provides my wife and me the best sleep ever…how! We turn the thermostat down to 64 at night. Sleeping upstairs allows the rising heat to make it a comfortable 65-66, perfect. Since buying the comforter, we are immediately warm and don’t wake up sweating as before with a down comforter. Great product!

Now the test I propose! Having recently purchased a Ducksback parka, I am completely warm and comfortable from 50 into the 20’s…so far! Colder wear is coming as winter sets in to Ohio. The parka is extremely comfortable and has become my favorite outdoor garment. Individually, I enjoy taking care of all of my equipment from guns to boots to clothing. In my latest instance, I washed my light blue (great color) parka to freshen it and remove a few stains on it. After the wash, I put it in the dryer, inside/ gray side) out where it took all of 5-10 minutes to dry on the inside of the parka.

Now, here are my findings and the test I propose you do on camera. When I flipped the parka to the outside/ blue side, I noticed all the remaining moisture was pushed out to the blue Ducksback side from the heat of the dryer. Final dry time was in 5 minutes or less.

This is a representation of the Wiggy’s claim and for me, the Wiggy’s Challenge where I took you at you word, soaked my Wiggy’s sleeping bag, then jumped in at 47 degrees. As predicted, I woke up completely dry and the outside only held a bit of moisture and in just a few areas. All of my body heat and Lamilite/Climashield worked perfectly together. Now, 25 years later, I conducted the Wiggy’s Challenge again, but indoor and I now call it the Wiggy’s Dryer Challenge.

Thanks again for a great, well made, comfortable product!

Give ‘em hell Jerry!

Jeff has written to me in the past with accounts of using my products which I have published. This is the first time he has embarked on testing them. Thank you for sharing what and how you did the tests and the results.

The number of people who have gotten wet and /or the bag has gotten wet and experienced what Jeff wrote is in the many hundreds that I know of. However it could or probably is in the thousands since I have sold many thousands of bags. The reality is as I believe that water is almost always something that you have to deal with when you go camping.

With regards to the Sunday article the one component of a sleeping bag I forgot to mention is the zipper. As I have written in past articles in the 1960’s through the 70’s most if not all of the high priced sleeping bags were made with the number 10 YKK molded tooth zipper which I have used since inception of Wiggy’s bags, but literally every other company making high priced sleeping bags has been using since the late 70’s a number 8 coil zipper. These zippers come with an unusual guarantee and that is “to break” within 6 months’ time. Does anyone want to go into the bush and suddenly discover that the zipper on their sleeping bag does not work, of course not. I have now given you enough factual information to guide you away from any and all other brands of what are commonly called sleeping bags?

OFF TO CROSS ANTARCTICA

The following link talks about two men who independently are at this moment attempting to walk across Antarctica. A subscriber sent me the link to the NYT published article. I believe these two men have a serious death wish. They are being aided in this attempt by companies who in my opinion have no clue if the products they have given them will work or not. my opinion is that they will not work.

Also, two years ago a guy tried this and died in the attempt. Last year a friend of the guy who died tried it and gave up since I assume he did not want to join his friend.

I for one wonder what is so attractive about walking on ice for almost 1000 miles and brutalizing yourself in the process. Let us assume for the moment one of these guys actually makes it how will humanity benefit? It reminds me of the non-stop flight around the world accomplished by this guy Routan and a woman named Yeager. My father in law was a pilot and he spent 22 years in the Air Force. I asked him what benefit the world of aviation would have as a direct result of their trip and he said none. The same holds true for this activity if one of them makes it. I am very skeptical that either of them will accomplish the walk. Also, I am quite sure they will punish their bodies in their attempt.

However their chances would be improved dramatically, not guaranteed to succeed, if they were to use Wiggy’s bags as well as clothing. For one they would not be subject to the major down fall they will suffer with all of the other items they are using and that is the moisture they produce. With Wiggy sleeping bags and clothing water generated by their bodies is nullified versus amplified as it is by what they are using and is therefore a problem. If you do any research into the single biggest problem ALL who have tried this exercise it all has to do with body produced moisture.

Any way it is an interesting read.

When it comes to walking adventures I recommend the AT, PC or Continental Divide.
