THE 40 DEGREE BAG AND AN UNUSUAL APPLICATION

Great bag for comfort in a cold room

I purchased one of the 40 Degree Bags for an unusual purpose. My mother, now in her early 90's, lives near Tampa, Florida. She recently needed to start dialysis three times a week. Though Tampa is warm and humid, she said the dialysis clinic was always kept quite cold. Given that she must remain stationary for 3 to 4 hours, she said she always felt like she was freezing. She tried dressing in various outfits but always felt cold. She began using the 40 Degree Bag weeks ago and reported it is warm, cuddly, and comfortably roomy, yet wraps her completely. The left-hand opening zipper allows access for the connecting dialysis port. The bag deploys quickly, conveniently packs in a travel bag, and has the advantage of being easily washable if needed and quick drying. Thanks for a great product!

Reading this testimonial is a first for me. Over the years I have been told that the Nautilus or any of the other rectangular models have performed very well when the temperature in a home has been less than comfy. The TV blanket has also been widely used since its inception as a part of the product mix.

Over the years I have known of many instances where the bags have been used for medical emergency use in the field. These were sleeping bags no hypothermia bags. Of course the hypothermia bags are used worldwide in the mountains or on the ocean.

The one common denominator is the fact that the insulation Lamilite is not as we know affected by water ever. That is a statement that cannot be attributed to any other insulating material in the world, even if it is synthetic. Someone might say; what about a product like primaloft. There is a difference that I have not previously addressed. Lamilite/Climashield starts out as a pure polyester fiber product with a silicone application applied to it. The fiber that is and has been used to make primaloft and I suspect many of the other chopped staple fiberfill products are coated with a polymer or sheath that will liquefy from heat and when it cools it becomes the binder that holds the fibers together. I believe at some point in its early existence it was mixed with water so when water is reintroduced to it, it absorbs all over again. This is also the reason the very thin quilted jackets that have chopped staple fiberfill in them collapse so easily. This holds true for every different branded or named primaloft sold. The water that is absorbed need not come from rain but from the sweat from your body. And of course once that moisture is absorbed by the binder fiber it does absorb heat from your body.

One thing Steve’s mom does not experience is moisture retention; minor as it is from her body because it just migrates through the Lamilite. However, in the field where survival is at stake Lamilite has and continues to do so shown that water which is deadly in cold weather situations does what it is supposed to do wet or dry.

So when you are out in the field with your Wiggy's bag you also have a hypothermia bag with you.
