ALONE SHELTER

Since so many people have told me they see contestants using Wiggy’s sleeping bags I have been watching it.

My observation is that these contestants spend far too much time building shelters and not enough time hunting for food.

When I sailed, I spent no time on a shelter and lots of time hunting for food. My sailboat was the VW of boats so maintenance was minimal. I was a steel hull vessel.

Therefore, these contestants need to have a quick shelter so they can devote more time hunting for food.

How can this happen?

All of them bring a tarp which they use to make an A frame which is a good start. It should be staked down very securely. It should be staked on the ground like a tent. You and all of you gear will easily fit under it. It will give you reasonably good protection from the weather. When I was in the army, we were issued shelter halves. Two guys would join their respective halves together and they were staked ground level. Rain and snow were kept out. I am sure the tents have changed since I was in.

There is no need to expend energy building grandiose log cabins. Each day you work on this structure wears you out so hunting for food is compromised.

The only reason you will need a fire is to cook the food you have acquired. The fire will obviously be outside of the shelter for obvious reasons. To have a fire within the shelter is a no, no. You do not need it for warmth. If you are wearing the garments, I have written about previously you will be warm and therefore dry.

It is now the end of your day having had a good meal that you caught in some manner because it did not take long to set up your shelter.

What you also setup in your shelter is a Wiggy’s SINGLE PERSON BIVI SHELTER [SPBS] the hunter model which is rectangular to accommodate a HUNTER ULTIMA THULE -20 F degree [and then some] sleeping bag. This model bag is 36 inches wide and 92 inches long. The size will give all the contestants ample creature comfort in their own bags. The SPBS has a weight of 3 pounds which includes the shock corded pole and the stakes. It stuffs into its built in stuff sack that is 15 inches long and 12 inches wide and 3 inches thick.

The SPBS has a pop up A-frame over your head so you can read a book. It also offers exceptional protection from all elements. It comes with a Ducksback top uninsulated or insulated if you want more insulation. See the website for more information.

So, even though you may not have closed up the ends of the A- frame you will be fine.

When you get into the Ultima Thule sleeping bag you will experience immediate warmth and will sleep easily because you have eaten. You can also be assured to wake up dry if you had perspired during the day and your clothing will be dry too.

The better your rest/sleep is the better you will feel each day to hunt. When dealing with hunters over the years they all agree that getting a good night’s sleep is beneficial for the next day’s hunt.

Demonstrating how ridiculous people can be with there shelters is one women who stands about 6 feet tall “needing” a shelter to stand in as if she were going to be in it for a good part of each day.

It seems to me the sooner one can establish a source or sources of food the better. Getting started on these building projects takes one away from the only important thing to do, establish the food source.

If you have followed my advice about the clothing one should wear and my sleeping bag your chances of surviving in any wilderness area you are put in so long as there are food sources is excellent!
