Durable water repellent surface

They contradict themselves at every turn. Above they claim durable water repellent, further down you will read that the material is waterproof. It is not unusual for gore to contradict themselves. The picture above shows two layers of material, but it is not quite two layers, the bottom layer is a fabric and the top is a membrane called gore-tex. However, the gore-tex membrane that I am familiar with is ptfe film and it is white. So this new membrane I suspect is a monolithic film. I think they are copying what Columbia Sportswear did about two years ago.

The above was written twice so they would convince themselves, also when you shake off the water it will dry quickly. It is as if the water is falling on a piece of glass.

The new revolutionary GORE-TEX® Active Products feature an outer surface that repels water. They are the lightest and most breathable GORE-TEX® products available. This it is not! The new product is also waterproof, windproof, very packable and maintains the wearing comfort in a broad range of weather conditions. The ever popular phrase of “waterproof” raises its head again. Do they also include cold conditions (?) I doubt it.

Meeting the demands of running and cycling athletes, the new GORE-TEX® Active products durably protect against wind & rain and reduce sweat accumulation in high aerobic activities. There is no explanation as to how this fabric will reduce sweat accumulation, sweating is an involuntary action of the body. Uniquely designed, the technology eliminates the face fabric, preventing absorption of water in order to maintain comfort in high aerobic activities. Monolithic film which is what I suspect it is has no capacity to absorb, therefore it will not let moisture out of the garment, so much for its “breathability”. Garments will retain these attributes during use, wearers will not experience the chilling effect that can result from a wetted out face fabric, and the garment drys out fast. The excellent balance of protection and comfort allows the wearer to leave the garment on – rain or shine. Wearers do not experience a chilling effect from wetted out fabric but from a wet skin surface which is what happens when the moisture one produces does not move out of the garment away from you.

Whenever I read about a new material from gore I am always more interested in knowing how they present it. I believe in order to work at gore one needs to have had a course in creative writing. This company keeps making the same product in a variety of ways so the only way to sell it is to create a new description of the so called new product. Over the years gore has made more and more of a concerted effort to produce finished garments under their own label. I expect it is as a direct result of companies who have been gore customers not wanting to buy into their new concepts. Maybe their time has come.
